A Brief History of Rosé
A Brief History of Rosé

Rosé has come a long way—from ancient history to modern-day happy hour. Here’s a quick look at how pink wine rose to fame (pun intended) and why we love making it at In Good Taste.

🍇 6th Century BC – The Accidental Origin

Rosé started with the ancient Greeks, who made light wines by pressing red grapes with minimal skin contact. They didn’t know it yet, but they were laying the groundwork for Provence-style rosé. Bonus fact: they diluted wine with water because strong wine was considered uncivilized. (Cheers to growth.)

🇫🇷 Middle Ages–1800s – Provence & the Loire Get It Right

French winemakers in Provence and the Loire Valley refined rosé-making with short maceration and crisp, dry styles. They weren’t aiming for poolside perfection, but they nailed it anyway.

🧺 1960s – Vacation Vibes in a Glass

With France mandating vacation days (oui, please), rosé became the drink of choice for relaxed, sun-soaked holidays. Julia Child gave it her stamp of approval: “Rosé can be served with anything.” Legend.

🍓 1974 – White Zinfandel Changes the Game

A stuck fermentation led to White Zinfandel—sweet, pink, and wildly popular. It may not have been dry and chic, but it got America talking about rosé. We’ll take the win.

📋 1990s – Blush Wine has a Glow-Up

Rosé shed its sugary rep as winemakers shifted toward drier, more refined styles. It started showing up on serious wine lists and at (slightly) more serious dinner parties.

📱 2010s – Rosés Go Viral

With hashtags like #roséallday and #yeswayrosé, rosé became the drink of summer. It wasn’t just delicious—it was a lifestyle. National Rosé Day was born, and pink wine was everywhere.

🌎 Today – A Global Obsession

Rosé now comes from every corner of the world and spans a huge range of styles—from bone dry to fruit-forward, Provence to Paso Robles. No longer a seasonal fling, rosé is a year-round love.

🍷 Rosé at In Good Taste

Our head winemaker, Matt Smith, has a real thing for rosé—and he’s got the skills to back it up. Every vintage, Matt sources grapes from top regions around the globe and brings out totally unique flavor profiles.

Think: crisp, juicy, refreshing, and full of personality. Whether it’s a sassy Grenache or a floral Pinot Noir blend, Matt’s rosés are made to pair with sunny afternoons and impromptu cheese boards alike.

💫 Final Sip

From ancient amphoras to mini bottles on your doorstep, rosé’s come a long way—and we’re just getting started. With Matt at the helm, you can count on a pink pour that’s as fun as it is finessed.

Cheers to drinking pink, all year long. 💕🍷
